So, Yesterday I get this email telling me that ASS Parking and meters will be suspended.  So I am being told I may keep my car parked where ever it is.

Notification issued 1/12/11 at 5:30 AM.  All New York City public schools will be open today, January 12, 2011.  However, all field trips today are cancelled.  The Chancellor will make a determination as to whether after-school programs and PSAL events will go on as scheduled at 10 AM.  New York City public schools have only closed 6 times since 1978 for a total of 8 lost educational days
There are 1.2 milling kids in NYC Schools and about 100,000 people staffing the schools.  If they want to keep the roads clear they have to close the schools.  Most of the kids walk, but most of the teachers and staff don't.

If it is a "Weather Emergency" shouldn't we be urged to stay home and not just keep off the roads?  Is this about keeping the kids safe or about getting the kids in their seats for the required number of days.

Fucking Snow!
As I type it is 6:30 am.  Lets see how this plays out.  Two weeks ago the Mayor was in Bermuda and the city was left to rot.  Yesterday I watched Court Street in Brooklyn Heights get salted twice 8 hours before the snow even began to fall.

This comment in the NY Times Blog is so on the money

Swallow your pride, Mr. Mayor! You don’t prove anything about the effectiveness of NYC’s cleanup of the snow by keeping the school’s open. You obviously don’t care about the well-being of the thousands of NYC teachers and school staff on their commute or where they will park! Completely idiotic!— NYCteacher

However the bottom line is that there was not need freak out and declare an "emergency".  There was only about 4 inches of snow.  It was an easy walk to school and the roads were fine.

  2. So how much snow do you have there?
As of 7:30am today we have a good foot here in Western, Mass.

We got the robo-call from the town telling us schools were closed yesterday about 6pm. My wife's college in Boston announced closure at 6:30. UMass did so overnight.

  3. My friend in Tennessee (yes, I just admitted that, I know) was complaining about this same thing. School's in session but there's a friggin' blizzard outside.

  4. AGREED my son just called from school asking to come home because he's bored, there aren't enough kids or teachers present to actually learn anything... of course, for him to come home a parent has to use roads and / or public transit to come and pick him up, since they won't let him leave on his own even though he gets there on his own

  5. Ridiculous that they think it's unsafe to drive but they want the children to get to school no matter what.
