Halloween is very emotional for me

I just got back from some Major League Trick-or-Treating with my kids.  My neighborhood is a tourist attraction for Halloween.  The Park Slope Civic Council throws a parade.  It is really sweet.  It is not the crazy think that goes on in Greenwich Village.  People here build haunted houses in their yards, there were even barbecues. It was about kids and fun.

I am sorry to bring this up, but Halloween is special to me for a different kind of reason.  2001 was the first time I had anything to do with Halloween since I was an adult.  My kids were about a year and a half old and we decided to dress them in matching bear costumes, put them in the running stroller and walk in the parade.

I will always remember that this was the first time since Sept 11th of that year that I noticed people in the street smiling and laughing.  I suddenly realized that everything was going to be OK, that it was again OK to smile and laugh in public.

  1. I know. Things relate back to certain milestones, and that was one that we can't forget.

Halloween here was spookily quiet. One pair of kids, two adults.

What happens when you live in hills.

  2. But such a nice way to start the healing process... a day with family & friends, laughing and having a good time.
