The Gowanus Canal and the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower

What's is yuckier?

1. Living in a building that used to be all dentist's offices (One Hanson Place)

or

2. Living over the Gowanus Canal (Toll Brothers Gowanus)

I got both in one picture and a reflections in the liquid (not water)

There is an urban legend that the canal served as a dumping ground for the Mafia. In Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn, a character refers to it as "the only body of water in the world that is 90 percent guns." In Lavender Lake, a 1998 documentary film about the Gowanus Canal by Alison Prete, two cops discuss the recent discovery by fishermen of a suitcase taken from the waterway that was full of human body parts.

One Hanson Place is for Millionaires and the not getting built project by the Gowanus is also luxury housing. Nobody with no roof is getting helped by these project.

But what will happen once those who qualify for loans buy the lux Toll apartments along the Gowanus and have to live with the summer smells and the risks from all the pathogens lurking in the vapors outside there windows; will we not then get alot of affordable housing along the Gowanus then? And what part can we expect the federal homemorgage program will have in "fixing" the problems Toll will leave behind on the Gowanus once they sell and take their share of the earnings? Can anyone answer?

Next to the Gowanus they will have a roof and they had better have good window and the best of the best HVAC system to keep the pathogen carrying vapors raising off the canal water and into their brand new homes.

I have probabally found a thoundsand dollars worth of metrocards, this list starts July 27, 2008

3-8-18: I must admit that I've been recalcitrant regarding my responsibilities on updating this column. Since last fall I have probably found about $100 worth of MetroCards mostly drop by runners who were ahead of me in large races like the New York City Marathon. In addition to that, last week my daughter was standing right next to me and picked up a card that had $40 on it. We were in a ballroom on the grounds of City College where a high school science and engineering fair was occurring.
9-14-17 Since the spring I have found about $25 worth of cards. One of them had over $13 on it and I found it on the path along the belt Parkway while running a race there. It was a challenge to bend down and pick it up but I knew it would have value because it was so far from the subway
5-21-16 Found the card at the starting line of the Brooklyn Half. It will work till May 31
12-28-15: found the card on the floor in Sears that will work till January 10
Haven't been in the subway since May and I now pay cash to go on espresso ride
4-20-14: $35

4-28-23 i see it's been many years since I actually updated this column. Things have changed through the pandemic. Even before the pandemic they started charging a dollar if you needed a new card. So they were somewhat less card laying around. But since the pandemic when they stop taking cash or combining cards in the boots there's been plenty of cards to pick up.But since the people in the boots come out of the boots I think the stations have actually been cleaner lately.The cards are laying around and until they stop using cards I would remind everyone to pick them up.
