What a mess in Prospect Park

I spent the afternoon in Prospect Park. First few days in a row with no rain in a while. The boy and I had a great time, we took in the Audubon Center, Lefferts Homestead and the Zoo. A perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon.

However, It looks like Prospect Park users just trashed the place.

Then I realized that park users a doing their best to be neat, but nobody is emptying the trash cans on Sunday July 5th. It must be a great job to work in a park and have Sundays off. (emphasis on sarcasm.)

I am not blaming the people who were hired to empty the trash barrels, this is poor management. It should not get this bad. If you hire people to empty the trash cans in a park, you should tell them they work weekends.

  1. I've checked into this. The city and the Prospect Park Alliance have suffered some major budget cuts. It's not simply more staff that's needed, but also vehicles to removed the trash. The vehicles require an operator with a CDL. Apparently drivers with a CDL would prefer to make more money driving trucks than working for minimum wage in the park. So, if anyone out there knows someone with a CDL and some community spirit, tell them to contact the Prospect Park Alliance HR department, or better- the Volunteers.

  3. Thanks Anonymous,

You are very right--in these tough economic times, the City Parks Department and Prospect Park Alliance are required to do more with less. Now, public parks and other free recreational spaces are attracting more visitors, and there is a need for more resources to maintain them...only problem being that there is less $$ to fund these resources.

So yes folks, volunteer to pick up trash, weed, plant, and all the other activities involved in keeping Prospect Park clean, safe, and beautiful!

  4. how about some signage telling these animals to clean up after themselves. How about enforcing littering and illegal bbqing rules. Sick and tired of the blind eye given to these "people" who consistently ruin the park

  5. Hey Anonymous. I don't know who you think "these people" are. But what are you supposed to do with the napkin when you buy a hot dog when the can is full.

There is no more enforcement in Central Park. They are just continually emptying the pails.
