New Hope

If you know me, you know I am a licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide. That does not mean much, but it should mean that I can come up with good ideas on what to do on a Friday. Not so much. Ask my wife. She just drops the bomb. Two weeks ago it was her idea to go Mini-golfing in Bushwick

Today she said "Lets go to New Hope for lunch and take the kids to the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works" We had a great time.

We ate lunch at a place called The Landing. We ate on a deck above the Delaware River. There were ducks walking around begging for food. I could have done with out that, this was a fancy restaurant and as far as I was concerned they were vermin. But the kids thought they were cute. Whatever. I ordered a watercress salad. Needless to say I did not know what watercress was. It was served with jicama. I thought jicama was watercress. Do you know what jicama is? Now you do.

Then we went to a 110 year old tile factory. We got a nice tour and they are still making tiles there. That was nice. But the cool thing was the home of the tile maker. Henry Mercer made a 44 room mansion out of pored concrete. He made it one room at a time. He pored the walls, and filled the chamber with sand. He rounded out the top of the pile of sand, placed a pattern of tiles face down in the sand and pored concrete for the ceiling. He made a very lopsided castle.

Back to New Hope for a less fancy dinner of American/Italian/Thai/Mexican at Wildflowers.

A no traffic 75 mile ride home and all is good.

  2. I can't believe that house was made out of poured concret. That is patience for you. Very cool!
