ING NYC Marathon Expo

This is the 17th year in a row I picked up my number for the NYC Marathon. (Click this for last years expo blog.) The Expo has evolved a lot. We used to fit into a Midtown hotel, then I had a chance to enter the New York Colosseum. For a few years it was on a seemingly abandoned pier over the Hudson River. (Then cruse ships returned to NYC and unabandoned it.) It seamed to permanently move to The Jacob Javits Convention Center (except for 2001 when Javits was busy.)

But going to the Expo is really a lesson in progress. Today it struck me how much things have changed.

After I got my bib I paused to pack it into my backpack. Suddenly I was an object for a photographer. She asked if she could take my photo for the NYRR Blog. I said sure if I can take your photo for my blog. Here she is. I don't think I made it to her blog. But I will keep checking.

Speaking of Blogging, at the expo I met my friends Frank and Emmy or should I say Rundangerously and ctmarathoner.

It reminded me that I have to drink more beer. Good beer. But not on a stomach only filled with Power Bar samples.

Another thing has changed about racing. We used to drink cups of water that were filled from fire hydrants. I thought t

his was a pretty efficient system. Now we have water pumped out of the ground in Maine, put in plastic bottles and trucked to NYC. At the expo they have the nerve to brag about how some of the bottles might be collected and recycled. None of them needed to be made in the first place.

Don't get me started on bottled water. The most decadent thing I ever do is open a bottle of water and dump it on my head.

Ahh, I miss the sights and sounds of the Expo this year. The closest I got to running this year is this little web quiz. Fun and silly but not nearly as great as the real thing. Good Luck to you. http://www.elevenmore.com/marathon.aspx

I have probabally found a thoundsand dollars worth of metrocards, this list starts July 27, 2008

3-8-18: I must admit that I've been recalcitrant regarding my responsibilities on updating this column. Since last fall I have probably found about $100 worth of MetroCards mostly drop by runners who were ahead of me in large races like the New York City Marathon. In addition to that, last week my daughter was standing right next to me and picked up a card that had $40 on it. We were in a ballroom on the grounds of City College where a high school science and engineering fair was occurring.
9-14-17 Since the spring I have found about $25 worth of cards. One of them had over $13 on it and I found it on the path along the belt Parkway while running a race there. It was a challenge to bend down and pick it up but I knew it would have value because it was so far from the subway
5-21-16 Found the card at the starting line of the Brooklyn Half. It will work till May 31
12-28-15: found the card on the floor in Sears that will work till January 10
Haven't been in the subway since May and I now pay cash to go on espresso ride
4-20-14: $35
4-11-14: $75
3-25-14: $50
3-2-14: a $35 card and a card that will work till the owner tell the MTA to stop deducting the money from his bank account. Both on the the course of a 5K

4-28-23 i see it's been many years since I actually updated this column. Things have changed through the pandemic. Even before the pandemic they started charging a dollar if you needed a new card. So they were somewhat less card laying around. But since the pandemic when they stop taking cash or combining cards in the boots there's been plenty of cards to pick up.But since the people in the boots come out of the boots I think the stations have actually been cleaner lately.The cards are laying around and until they stop using cards I would remind everyone to pick them up.
